The lake is home to fish and more than 200 different species of birds. It is a natural lake and is estimated to have formed 5,000,000 years ago. It has joined the European Network NATURA 2000 as a place of special natural beauty.
Visit to the Cave of the Dragon, which is located on the lakeside road 2 km before the Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa. during the Pleistocene and disappeared about 10,000 years ago.
Visit to the Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa which is located at the eastern end of the peninsula that enters the lake, at a distance of 4 km from the city. It was probably founded during the days of the emperor Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118).
Its exterior frescoes are placed around 1260.
Visit to the Neolithic settlement of Dispilio, which is considered the oldest in Europe between the 6th and 4th millennium BC. and is located at “Island” on the south shore of the lake.
It was accidentally discovered in 1932 when the level of the lake went down and the remains of wooden stakes appeared. So it is estimated that about 3,000 people lived in a well-organized society, where they fished and made tools, knew music and writing.
